Wonderboy battle to get paid

UFC 291 Controversy: Stephen Thompson and the Fight that Never Happened

The Weight Dilemma at Delta Center
In the lead up to the anticipated UFC 291 PPV event at Delta Center, Salt Lake City, Utah, all eyes were on Stephen Thompson and Michel “Demolidor” Pereira. Thompson, a former UFC welterweight title challenger, fulfilled his part by making weight. Pereira, however, fell short by three pounds. This weight discrepancy took center stage, especially after Thompson opted not to accept a portion of Pereira’s purse, thereby nullifying the bout.

Dana White Speaks Out: The UFC Payment Structure
Addressing the controversy, UFC President Dana White shed light on the organization’s payment structure during the “Contender Series” press conference. He emphasized that fighters aren’t simply paid for showing up. While Thompson had the right to refuse a fight against an overweight opponent, White pointed out that the promotion also extended another fight offer which Thompson declined. The UFC’s aim, according to White, is not just to withhold pay but to ensure fighters are compensated in ways that reflect their efforts and circumstances.

What’s Next for “Wonderboy” Thompson?
At 40, Thompson isn’t done yet. He has voiced his desire to re-enter the Octagon, eyeing a matchup with former welterweight champion Kamaru Usman for UFC 295 in New York City on Nov. 11. While discussions about Thompson’s UFC 291 reimbursement are ongoing, fans eagerly await confirmation on his next fight and the resolution of this payment dispute.
