Former UFC fighter Nate Diaz is set to face a second-degree battery charge after an altercation with a Logan Paul look-alike during a street fight in April. The preliminary court hearing is scheduled for June 27th in New Orleans, Louisiana. Though it’s unlikely that Diaz will spend significant time in prison, a guilty verdict could result in a more expensive civil suit.
The incident occurred after a Misfits Boxing event featuring Diaz’s teammate Chris Avila. Diaz and his teammates got into an altercation with former football player and YouTube celebrity boxer Chase DeMoor. Later that night, Diaz and DeMoor came into contact again outside a New Orleans bar, which resulted in a street brawl with members of Diaz’s team and DeMoor throwing punches until police arrived to break things up.
During the brawl, a Logan Paul lookalike named Rodney Petersen approached Diaz and backed him up against a wall. Even with his hands up in an unthreatening manner, Petersen looked like enough of a threat for Nate to put him in a choke hold, dropping him to the pavement unconscious. Diaz’s legal representative, Zach Rosenfield, called the move self-defense.
The incident will have no impact on Diaz’s upcoming fight against Jake Paul on August 5th in Dallas, Texas, other than to serve as a distraction as he heads into the biggest payday of his fighting career. Diaz is a free agent and is most known for his time spent fighting in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), where he fought for over 15 years after winning The Ultimate Fighter 5. He has the third most UFC bonus awards, with 16 in total.
Diaz raised in Stockton, California, with his brother Nick and sister Nina. He began training in martial arts with his brother at the age of 11 and competed in a bare-knuckle MMA fight against Robert Limon at the age of 17 before making his official professional MMA debut mainly for World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC).
